"Is that because you just had to turn in a reflection assignment for a significant portion of the course grade," you ask? Hogwash, I don't believe it and neither should you. Up to now you've read first impressions of the Ecuadorian system, informative analyses of geography and policy, thoughtful praise, and incisive criticism. Look, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that Ecuador and the Andes don't have some VAST challenges to surmount, as well as some seriously questionable politicking from President Correa on down.

For example, my own research and experience (or a cursory glance at any major media outlet) paints a vivid yet all-too familiar picture: a president who rode into the Palacio del Gobierno on a swell of support from the poor and historically marginalized groups who were to receive, at long last, a seat at the negotiating table. Once in office, however, Mr. Correa surged ahead with his own agenda and about sidelining dissenting voices, attempting legal action against opposition media outlets and branding indigenous organizers as obstructionists who wished, above all, to frustrate Ecuador's entry into the 21st century. Almost overnight, those whose struggles Candidate Correa venerated had become political enemies whom President Correa vilified. What social and political strides indigenous organizations like CONAIE have made ring somewhat hollow when we consider the economic dimension: "Indigenous" and "Poor" are two demographic indicators with a strong correlation. The country has problems, I don't mind telling you. But I'm going to tell a little story- one that, for me, put everything we had learned and seen into excellent perspective and provided an excellent bookend for the program. If you'd be so kind as to accompany me, or, as they say on the Presidential Palace tour "Sigan, por favor, tengan la bondad..."

...the afternoon had gone as many others before it-- fantastic lunch, museum tours, impromptu games of chicken against taxis in the Centro Historico with which Profe was none too impressed. We entered the magnificent Casa Gangotena boutique hotel just off the Plaza de San Francisco in the historic district and sat down for fresh jugo while we waited to meet our gracious host: Casa Gangotena's owner, one-time Quito mayor, and ecotourism magnate Roque Sevilla. Over juice, coffee, and hors d'oeuvres, Mr. Sevilla regaled us with tales of how his various ventures came into existence and what direction the ecotourism industry may take (turns out it is possible to run an eco-lodge where you never have to touch an insect.) He continued with a self-effacing account of the eruption of the Pichincha volcano just west of Quito during his tenure as mayor, and gave us the inside track on automobile admissions standards in Ecuador.

Late in the conversation, over the course of giving answers to several of our questions, Roque turned to comparisons between this country and the United States. More specifically, he contrasted the sometimes bullheaded manner of the Correa administration with something a little bit more familiar to us: United States Politics. He couldn't understand, for the life of him, why a country whose people had been behind so many of the innovations that have made the last two centuries what they were suddenly seemed lost in a morass of stubbornness, can't-do spirit, and social movements that, once in motion, seemed to go nowhere. We brainstormed over the myriad reasons why Occupy Wall Street (or DC, or Oakland, or pick a city) had failed, or at least stalled. We contrasted the failure of the electric car due to political, industry and consumer inertia with Ecuador's ambitious plan for rising fuel efficiency standards. And we lamented the reluctance of many of our leaders to risk re-election by actually making the progress they avowedly believed in. And just then, something clicked in my head. For all of its many problems, the current mindset in Ecuador still seems to be that hey, we can get. stuff. done. Diversity actually seems like something that people (avowedly) appreciate, and really believe will result in better decisions, even though it might take far longer. Rural communities don't have to simply put up with the harmful effects of large-scale mining operations just because the mining companies and the governments (sometimes) supporting them are powerful. They can mobilize, be heard, and get results. No, not everything will get done, and many things will seem much better on paper than they will actually turn out. But the belief, the will, is there, and sometimes I think that the U.S. has lost sight of that will. Granted, any compare/contrast between two so vastly dissimilar countries is going to be hugely inadequate, and neither do I have an ear to the ground in the Palacio to really, really know what's going on. Still, ensconced as it is in the omnipresent Buen Vivir, the politics and zeitgeist of Ecuador provides a few points on life in the 21st century which could, I think, serve as examples for many other, more "advanced" places in the world.
In a lecture I attended, a speaker suggested that, Afro-Ecuadorians
would say they prefer being discriminated against but visible in Ecuadorian
society rather than being invisible. What do you think of this statement?

First, I have never known an Afro-Ecuadorian who prefers to be discriminated. In fact, we are fighting against these two topics: discrimination
and invisibility. People have to understand one important thing: Invisibility
is a consequence of discrimination. Discrimination cannot
be a path to visibility because, when we discriminate against others for any reason, we
are denying their origins, rights, culture, and existence. Discrimination is
not a form of visibility.

3.) I understand that recent census data shows that the
number of self-identified Afro-Ecuadorians
is higher that the total number of self-identified indigenous people. Do
you think of yourself as indigenous?
Why do you think that Afro-Ecuadorians
did not identify themselves as indigenous
in the census?

When I hear the term indigenous, I think of the people who were in this region first, before others travelled here. This does not describe my people. We were brought here from Africa 600 years ago. This is why many Afro-Ecuadorians did not identify themselves as indigenous in the census.

Personally, I know that I have mestizo roots but I do not identify as mestizo. This is because, when I walk down the street, society sees me as black rather than mestizo. The way that society sees me has shaped my life experiences. For this reason I identify myself as Afro-Ecuadorian.

The recent census was interesting also because Afro-Ecuadorians had the option to self-identify as black or of African descent. Many people chose to self-identify as black because they felt like the term Afro-Ecuadorian has been popularized by political elites with personal interests rather than by black people.

4.) I understand that FENOCIN is an indigenous
organization within Ecuador that works to secure rights for several indigenous
groups, including Afro-Ecuadorians.
Do you think that organizations like this one are truly working to help the Afro-Ecuadorian community?

Ecuador, we have about thirty Afro-Ecuadorian organizations that are supposed
to be working for us, but in reality these groups focus on personal interests
rather than the interests of Afro-Ecuadorians. For this reason, I don’t believe
in these organizations. Unfortunately, we don’t have a solid Afro-Ecuadorian
group who can represent us politically, intellectually and culturally and
present a more positive image of our people. Right now, many individuals think of us only as people who play sports, engage in manual labor and law
enforcement jobs, or commit crimes and go to prison. This is a problem for my people.
As Afro-Ecuadorians, we need to develop awareness campaigns that explain
the racist nature of the restaurant name and logo. For example, we could start a campaign with the slogan: “No compres las menestras del
negro” and share ideas with Afro-Ecuadorians and other Ecuadorians about why we
should not eat at Menestras del Negro until they update their name and logo.

There is a good article on the story here.

While Assange is a highly controversial figure himself, the granting of asylum, if it happens, will be about more than simply freedom of expression and transparency. As a matter of fact, the track record in Ecuador of freedom of press is rather bad, with reporters who speak out against the government being subject to harassment, attacks or being essentially made unemployable because of government interventions (note: to be fair, attacks are generally carried out by citizens who are passionately supportive of the government, not the organization itself. or, perhaps better put, there is little evidence to indicate that the government itself carries out attacks). For more on press freedom issues in Ecuador, check out CPJ's website.

Whatever the reason that Ecuador has gotten itself involved in the Assange case, it is sure to be interesting to see how it plays out.Fayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07505076259904235012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986961622395447341.post-86363552065112151262012-07-23T14:42:00.000-07:002012-07-24T06:05:49.506-07:00Bus Transportation in Quito - Ecovia, Terminal Terreste, and Other Options

ECOVIA

Each evening, I take the Ecovia from my internship to my hostel near la Mariscal. The bus travels along Avenida 6 de Deciembre from La Marin to Rio Coca. For more information about the various stops, see the route map below. Also, for a brief YouTube video of the Ecovia in action, visit: Ecovia in Action (Set to Music).

The Ecovia has its advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, at 25¢ per ride, it is very inexpensive! Wondering if you need to have exact change? The answer is yes and no. The turnstile only accepts quarters but an on-site staffer will exchange your nickels, dimes, and 50¢ pieces for quarters. I would not, however, recommend asking the staffer to break bills for you as, again, they are primarily dealing with nickels and dimes.

On the negative side, the buses get extremely crowded! There have been several occasions where I thought there was no way even one more person could fit and, to my surprise, another six or seven people would hop aboard! Also, the buses are prone to frequent and sudden stops so, if you are not holding on the handrails, you could fall forwards or backwards and knock down several people - picture dominoes falling. In addition, exiting the bus can be challenge because you must push through the crowd and break through before the door closes.

You may notice that most people keep close watch over their belongings. For example, many people wear their backpacks in front of them. Certainly a prudent practice for all public transportation excursions! All and all, however, the Ecovia (and other similar buses) provides an opportunity to travel great distances within the city of Quito at a low cost seven days a week.

For my trip, at the recommendation of a friend from Cuenca, I bought a bus ticket with a private company - Flota Imbabura. The Flota Imbabura station is located at the corner of Portoviejo and Manuel Larrea (about a 20-min walk or 10-min cab ride from the heart of La Mariscal). In addition to traveling to and from Cuenca, Flota Imbabura had buses traveling to Guayaquil, Ibarra, and other cities.

I highly recommend buying your ticket at least one or two days ahead of time because, if you try and purchase a ticket on the day of, you may have to wait in line 1-2 hours to buy your ticket and many of the departure times are already booked up. Another thing to keep in mind is that the temperatures on the buses were a bit extreme. On the way to Cuenca, the heat was quite high but, on the way back, there was no heat and the ride was freezing! If you have a blanket, it might be a good idea to bring it in case you experience the latter. Overall, the bus experience was comparable to long distance buses in the U.S. With that in mind, you can draw your own conclusions about whether or not taking a bus is the right choice for you. Personally, if an opportunity presents itself, I will definitely take advantage of this inexpensive mode of travel in the future!

Throughout my
time in Ecuador, I have been struck by the recurring theme of balance in all things. Our trip began with tours of Mitad del Mundo and Old Town
Quito, including the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, a beautiful church with
ornate representations of pineapples and grape vines placed intentionally
throughout the space. While studying these representations, we learned of how the people of Ecuador have addressed notions of balance, or harmony, both historically and in the present.

Gruppo Salinas operates under the principles of transparency, honesty, loyalty, responsibility, solidarity, and democracy. These principles, coupled with their commitment to economic complementarity, have allowed the people of Salinas to make the most of the abundant resources in the area while being mindful of the need to preserve the land for future generations. In fact, from a young age, children in Salinas are taught to harvest flowers and herbs but always with the awareness that, when they are finished harvesting for the day, there should still be enough for tomorrow. The children are taught to harvest just enough and, by extension, are taught about both sustainable business practices and harmony with the natural world.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">From an
environmental standpoint, Ecuador seems to be in the midst of implementing a
number of top-down public directives and initiatives to address common environmental
concerns found all over the world. But like all countries, Ecuador faces the
need to grow economically while demonstrating a genuine commitment to a clean
environment and sustainability in the long-term. Below are some environmental
observations based on our discussions and our travels around Ecuador.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">First,
there's the obvious air pollution issue in Quito. Spend a few days here,
especially in the lower elevations of the valley, and you'll notice a lingering
cloud of smog hanging over the city. Indeed, a member of AU’s undergraduate
“Global Scholars” group we met in Quito was clearly astonished by how “dirty”
Quito was compared to the United States (it was the first time he had left the
US). For my part, the city streets seemed fairly clean compared to other Latin
America countries I have visited.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">But keep
in mind that many large cities (like Santiago, Chile) surrounded by mountains
suffer from the “bowl effect” that keeps airborne pollutants trapped by the
surrounding topography, drastically reducing air quality.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Combine
this issue with an inefficient city layout, constant gridlock, rapid expansion,
hundreds if not thousands of soot-belching, cringe-inducing diesel city buses,
and it's obvious that Quito has some major challenges to improving
environmental quality, and this is only one specific environmental area.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">

But
then again, this is a surprise to no one, and secondhand remarks note that
pollution levels have actually decreased dramatically in the past 30 years.
Although I heard numerous complaints about the location of the new airport,
located what will likely be at least an hour's drive from Quito because of
traffic, this area of activity will likely shift a significant percentage of
airborne pollutants from aircraft and traffic outside of the central valley of
Quito.

Also,
the massive government investments in public transportation infrastructure such
as the new metrorail, new restrictions on personal vehicle usage (only a
percentage of registered personal vehicles are allowed on the streets in the
morning and evening rush hours – known as pico
y placa), and initiatives to remove vehicular traffic from certain parts of
the city (the Old City) are taking direct aim to bolster economic development
but make it sustainable – also known as “smart growth”.

Outside
of the city, deforestation from expanding, small-scale rural agriculture is
another well-known challenge. Much of this issue is due to historical factors
tied to Spanish colonization where indigenous farmers were forced out of the
rich, bountiful valley soils and onto the tree-covered mountain sides to grow
their own food.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">

Although
the hacienda system is now defunct, some indigenous groups continue to live in
these highland areas and, to maintain their livelihoods, continue to deforest
for cropland or grazing areas for livestock, as well as using the wood for
heating fuel.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Another important factor in deforestation is the usage of
antiquated agricultural practices. The adoption of modern agricultural
techniques was cited in our discussions as one avenue for raising food
production while limiting inputs and plot size. In our visit to Salinas de
Bolivar, we noted the burning and/or removal of the paramo grass / ecosystem
for graze land.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">Finally,
perhaps the most well-known environmental initiative here is the Ishpingo-Tiputini-Tambococha
(ITT) Yasuni National Park initiative, which calls for the international
community to pay the Ecuadorean government to not exploit for oil one of richest biological hotspots in the
world. The idea, certainly revolutionary, has seen some success, but with the
global recession, world governments have been less enthusiastic to contribute
of late.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">From my
own perspective, the ITT-Yasuni initiative is certainly outside-the-box as an
idea, but I am skeptical of its long-term survival. What are plans B, C and D
if enough money is not raised to protect the area from oil exploitation? How
serious is the government in protecting this area versus raising cash from oil
production, and, which activity will ultimately provide the greatest long-term
investment returns? Would the government really exploit the area in the end
just to add a few billion dollars more to its coffers? I doubt it.

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt;">In sum,
Ecuador’s environmental outlook is similar to almost any country in the world, except that Ecuador's environment is one of the world's most diverse. Development remains the number one motivation, particularly in times of global
recession. After all, the environment doesn’t vote at the polls. But concern
remains here for the long-term viability of environmental resources, and as the
government’s theme of “Buen Vivir” indicates, Ecuadoreans are as interested in
economic development as they are for social and environmental protections.
Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06163254749352478711noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986961622395447341.post-85835778502089465032012-06-21T11:13:00.000-07:002012-06-21T19:58:41.435-07:00Ecotourism in Amazon

income, offering tourists to experience the region’s rich culture and nature.
Coastal beaches, the Andes mountains and the Amazon rainforest are all within a few hours drive of each other, and present vastly different geographic areas, cultures and cuisines. Though differences have been an advantage over the years, with trade between groups providing potatoes to the coastal folks and citrus fruits to the highland residents, the areas have also presented challenges in managing diversity and in insuring that each region's population is recognized and included. Below is a short synopsis of the geographic regions of Ecuador.

Coast - found in the west of Ecuador, the coast is densely populated, but also holds much of the population which lives in poverty. This are is also where many of the Afro Ecuadorians reside, as well as several distinct indigenous groups. A major city on the coast is Guayaquil.

Highlands - Running along the center of the country are the highlands, which are called so because they are part of the Andean mountain range. This area is also densely populated, and most residents are either mestizo (mixed race) or indigenous. Quito, the capital of Ecuador, is in the highlands region.

Oriente - The eastern part of Ecuador is the Oriente, or the rainforest region. It is called the Oriente because it was originally thought to be the Orient, or Asia, when it was discovered. The word Amazon is in fact Greek in origin, and refers to an oriental group which the first explorers thought they had discovered. This area is hot, humid and home to many indigenous groups, as well as one of the most bio diverse areas in the world. Unfortunately, this is also where large oil reserves are found in Ecuador, including the Yasuni reserves, which for now are safe, but in the future could be exploited and cause irreparable damage to the wildlife in the area.Fayehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07505076259904235012noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986961622395447341.post-86703508111305829812012-06-18T22:32:00.001-07:002012-06-18T22:32:56.824-07:00Buen Vivir

I am in love with Ecuador, and perhaps it was even at first
sight. A great sense of hope, of progress and change seems to flow throughout
this picturesque country, something I have not known in the USA since I was a
child. Indeed, the picture being painted of Ecuador both inside and outside the
classroom is of an up-and-coming nation, rich in diversity of culture and environment, among many others. At the same time, Ecuador is not without the myriad
problems and challenges of a developing Latin American country reeling from
more than 400 years of colonial rule and the ever-present forces of
globalization.

Over the past two weeks, the six of us have been exposed in
equal parts to the themes of development, diversity and sustainability as
Ecuador solidifies its common identity, values, and direction as a “pluri-national”
state.

More often than not,
the current Ecuadorean government’s theme of “Buen Vivir” (“good
life”) illustrates a common desire for a future state that is not defined by
American or European ideals of what a “developed” country looks like, but an ideal defined by Ecuadoreans
themselves. From the American perspective, this makes perfect sense—you craft
your own destiny (when you have the chance), but in a country dominated by
others for so long, the prospect of establishing a common identity and destiny
is a major step forward. Of course, Buen Vivir is open for interpretation—in Ecuador
as anywhere, political wrangling and disagreement abounds.

The idea of Buen Vivir attempts to balance economic development
with equally valuable necessities for a productive and rich life such as ensuring
public health, protecting the environment, and maintaining the priceless,
diverse elements of Ecuadorean culture and environment.

Of course, all of these things cost money, and one of the
most poignant reminders of Ecuador’s forceful commitment to economic
development as a central pillar for achieving Buen Vivir is the infrastructure
and road-building frenzy taking place from the traffic-choked capital
of Quito, to the Pan American highway and the twisty mountain roads that
snake across the Andes. Indeed, on our way to Salinas de Bolivar, a rural
indigenous community high up in the mountains (~13,000ft), we had to wait while
construction crews dynamited part of the mountainside for a new road! Boom!

At this point, I am inclined to think that even though we
have learned an enormous amount from Professor Clark and all of the excellent
speakers and locals we have encountered, I find myself often thinking back to what
“buen vivir” means to me personally and in the USA more broadly. Certainly, I have learned that development, sustainability, and diversity are concepts that are very relative, and open to interpretation.
Jonathanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06163254749352478711noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-986961622395447341.post-4766849355573037842012-06-07T16:34:00.000-07:002012-06-07T16:55:16.111-07:00"Come Pick Me Up, I've Landed"
Welcome, one and all, to the Inaugural Post of SIS Ecuador
Summer 2012 Blogtacular! I’m pleased to report that all participants are here
in Quito and in excellent health, thanks in no small part to our wonderful hosts, Consuelo and Patricio of The Owl's Inn. Minus some intermittent issues adjusting to
the elevation, I’d say we all did extraordinarily well.

Our introduction to the city was nothing short
of fantastic. Many thanks to Julio Rivas, our intrepid guide, for the
impassioned and knowledgeable tours of La Mitad del Mundo (the point where the
Equator crosses Quito):
wasn’t until the next morning that things got serious. Having recovered
from varying degrees of altitude sickness, we struck out for the U.S. Embassy

All in
all, it was a fittingly varied entree (the 2nd definition, that doesn't mean food- though we've certainly had plenty of that) into a seminar that will have us learning
about the impossibly multifaceted topic of diversity in the Andes region. We’ve begun our
classes at la Universidad de las Americas in earnest, and I think it’s fair to
say that issues of diversity, development, and sustainability in this part of
the world are far more complex than any of us could have anticipated. That’s
really saying something, considering that SIS courses give us just about all
the complexity we can handle as it is. But the enormous challenges faced by our
generation demand scholars and practitioners who know how to tackle tough issues from multiple directions. With
Professor Donoso-Clark’s guidance and the behind-the-wheel stylings of Edwin,
who gets us from place to place with a level of finesse that, frankly, shouldn’t be
possible in our gigantic yellow van, I’m thinking we have a real shot at doing
some big things based on what we learn here.
